Welcome to Our Preschool Program

Preparing Children for Kindergarten and Beyond Through Play, Growth, and Connection

At Dartmouth Children’s Center, our preschool program provides children ages 2 years 9 months through kindergarten with a dynamic, nurturing, and developmentally rich environment designed to prepare them for lifelong learning. Rooted in our belief that children learn best through play, exploration, and meaningful relationships, our preschool program focuses on fostering the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally, and physically.

We understand that the preschool years are a critical time for developing foundational skills that extend far beyond kindergarten readiness. During this stage, children are building self-confidence, self-regulation, problem-solving abilities, social competence, and a love for learning. Our child-centered, play-based curriculum supports these essential developmental milestones while honoring each child’s unique pace and strengths.

A Play-Based Curriculum Focused on Holistic Development

Our preschool program emphasizes the seven key domains essential for school readiness and lifelong success:

  • Social & Emotional Development
  • Language & Literacy
  • Math & Reasoning
  • Science & Exploration
  • Social Studies & Community Awareness
  • Creative Arts & Self-Expression
  • Physical Development

Through hands-on experiences, small group learning, large group activities, and individualized guidance, children actively engage in meaningful learning opportunities that encourage curiosity, creativity, and independence.

Social-Emotional Development at the Core

At Dartmouth Children’s Center, we believe social-emotional development is the foundation for all future learning. Our preschool classrooms prioritize helping children:

  • Build positive relationships with peers and teachers
  • Develop self-regulation and emotional awareness
  • Practice problem-solving and conflict resolution
  • Strengthen confidence and independence
  • Learn empathy, cooperation, and resilience

Using intentional emotional coaching, positive guidance, structured routines, and supportive teacher-child relationships, we help children move from co-regulation toward greater independence and self-management.

Learning Through Exploration and Discovery

Our classrooms are carefully designed to inspire active learning and foster critical thinking through engaging learning centers, including:

  • Literacy and writing areas
  • Math and science exploration
  • Dramatic play
  • Art and creative expression
  • Block and construction play
  • Gross motor activities
  • Sensory experiences

Children are encouraged to explore their interests, collaborate with peers, and build upon prior knowledge through teacher-facilitated, language-rich experiences.

Building Independence and Confidence

Preschool is a time when children begin developing the self-help, leadership, and decision-making skills necessary for future success. Our program fosters independence by encouraging children to:

  • Participate in classroom jobs and responsibilities
  • Make choices and solve problems
  • Develop self-help skills
  • Follow routines and transitions
  • Build confidence in their abilities

By creating predictable yet flexible routines, children gain the structure they need while also learning to adapt and grow.

Strong Family and Community Partnerships

We recognize that families are children’s first and most important teachers. Our preschool program values collaborative relationships with families and promotes strong home-school connections through:

  • Daily communication
  • Family events and involvement opportunities
  • Parent conferences
  • Cultural inclusivity and family representation
  • Community-building experiences

We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every child and family feels respected, valued, and connected.

Establishing Strong Roots for Lifelong Success

Our preschool program is more than preparation for kindergarten—it is preparation for life. By combining academic readiness with a strong emphasis on social-emotional development, independence, and relationship-building, we help children develop the roots of confidence, compassion, and resilience while giving them the wings to soar.

At Dartmouth Children’s Center, we are proud to provide a preschool experience that celebrates the joy of learning, nurtures the whole child, and prepares children for a bright and successful future.

Establishing roots, encouraging wings—preparing children for today and tomorrow.
